The title of this work comes from Audre Lorde’s “Movement Song,” a poem that meditates on the painful yet necessary process of moving forward. Artist GeoVanna Gonzalez draws from this text to explore the fragility and resilience of the self. Central to her practice is the concept of release, as she often engages with themes of impermanence, transformation, and the human relationship to time.
In this sculpture, breaking is not seen as destruction but as a natural progression—an acceptance of the inevitable shifts that come with letting go. The solid, grounded steel armature contrasts with the fragile ceramic vessels, creating a tension between permanence and transience. As the vessels break, they symbolize the liberation of memory from the physical form, reflecting the broader cycles of growth, loss, and renewal found in both nature and personal experience. Through this piece, Gonzalez invites us to reflect on how we hold, carry, and ultimately release the many layers of our identity and history.
