In a world where movements are often controlled and dictated, how can agency be reclaimed? PLAY, LAY, AYE ACT: 7 explores the paradox of being both unseen and visible, navigating spaces where recognition and acknowledgment intersect with the freedom to redirect oneself. Through dance, this performance challenges the norms that confine individuals and celebrates movement as a form of liberation.
Recognizing that systems of control not only monitor but also shape the sense of freedom by subtly dictating the acceptable paths to follow, PLAY, LAY, AYE ACT: 7 seeks to expose these paths and challenge us to create new ones. This process aims to help reclaim autonomy and redefine what it means to move freely.
PLAY, LAY, AYE is an evolving series performed in distinct "Acts." Merging sculpture with performance, the work draws inspiration from the French Victorian tête-à-tête—a sofa with an S-curve shape allowing two sitters to face each other intimately without touching. This historical design evokes themes of desire, intimacy, secrecy, and restraint.
Reimagined as a modular metal form, the tête-à-tête in PLAY, LAY, AYE removes barriers between bodies. Constructed from expanded metal, the piece echoes materials used in public park furniture, spaces historically significant to the LGBTQ+ community for intimate encounters.
Each "Act" of PLAY, LAY, AYE presents a new configuration and performance, transforming the installation into a continually reinvented work. The structure is built, dismantled, and reimagined each time, offering a new exploration of connection and interaction.
